This place has been around since the 50s and my grandparents used to go here way back when. If you want Italian food like your grandmother used to make, go here. The food is basic and simple. Also their tomato sauce isn't a traditional red sauce. It's more of a brown sauce and it's yummy. I had my rehearsal dinner here it they did an awesome job. I believe that the daughter is currently running the restaurant and she is only open a few nights a week and sometimes takes a few weeks off for vacation. So it would probably be a good idea to call ahead and see if they're open.

When in South Bend you must visit this little slice of Notre Dame! The food is old school Italian. Everything is delightful.

Sunny Italy is a true gem in South Bend. Real, classic, authentic Italian food with a wonderful, comfortable atmosphere. I was privileged enough to have my wedding rehearsal dinner here in August, just as my parents did 40 years earlier, and Sunny Italy made my family and my husband's family from Argentina feel so at home with delicious food and a memorable, fabulous evening. I would recommend Sunny Italy to anyone traveling through or living in South Bend for its great soups, classic pastas, and friendly, caring waitstaff. Thanks for everything, Sunny Italy!

Great traditional Italian grandma type of place. Hasn't changed much in 15 years, probably hasn't changed in 50 years. If you want chain restaurant Italian go to grape rd. If you want food out of a Italian family's kitchen go here . Attentive wait staff, not high school kids.

Horrible. Dirty. Tasteless. The worst Italian restaurant I've ever left. In South Bend, IN, a city devoid of decent restaurants, this is at the bottom of the list. Doesn't deserve a single star, but can't review without.

This restaurant was a big disappointment for my husband and I. I like family-owned hole-in-the-walls, but this place doesn't live up to its rep. Food pricey, especially with the boring salad and toast. Servers wear tux shirts, but there's paper napkins and plastic tablecloths. Nothing "sunny" about it - it's dark, like a supper club. Servers were too anxious and hovered over tables; took my husband's plate before he finished. Food very bland - not basic, just forgettable, like Prego. Meatball (the only one) had odd consistency. Pasta selection lacking. Sometimes you gotta know when to hang it up; you can't use your family history as a crutch.

I have had ketchup that has more flavor than their spaghetti sauce. Food tasted like it was frozen and heated up in a microwave. Waitress never really spoke to me just came and took my plate away before i was finished. Salad was iceberg with a slice of a Roma tomato and one slice of cucumber. I fell that I should say one positive, the bruschetta app was good.

Just because it never closed does not mean it should stay open. The food here is sub-par and expensive and the wine is also over-priced. I had the pasta and sausage and while it was good, with wine, we dumped more money than this simple "ragu" shop was worth.

Quite disappointing. Anemic, tired. Summary: A short distance from downtown. What could be a retro-hip Italian eatery shows its age and lack of interest in its customers. Lackluster, wildly overpriced food and tired decor. Best avoided until a much needed renovation. My experience: I ate here on a Thursday evening. The decor is a kind of 70's thing; accoustic tile ceiling, run-of the mill seating, plastic red and white checked tablecolths. Three middle-aged waitstaff in black pants and tux shirts. There are several tables in the front dining area; there's a rear dining area a few steps up that was empty. On the banquette separating the two areas is a row of artificial potted plants that are underlit with white light. This makes for a green glow that casts the diners in a Munsters-like pallor. Hmmm, not too appetizing. The menu is brief and lists your typical casual itialian fare, spaghetti with various sauces and toppings, veal and chicke parmesan, shrimp, a couple of fish entrees and the like. There's a small and unispired wine list. On this night there were no specials. I had the bruschetta to start, which was OK. And a glass of pinot noir; also OK. My entree was spaghetti with "homemade" sausage. At $25 bucks, I expected greatness; but I found it edible but not memorable in any way. For dessert, I asked the waiter what he recommended, and he steared me to the spumoni. It was, you know, ice cream. Whatever. The espresso was bland and not served with a lemon peel. If the food were a bit better, this might be fine for Grandma and Grandpa. My Free Advice: RENOVATE. Clean. Install a bar in the back and serve nice appetizers and more sophisticated wines. Get rid of the artificial plants. Hire a chef to update the menu and add a couple of fun dishes to the traditional stuff. Make the food worthy of the double-the-going-rate prices. Decide what you want to be: sophisticated and pricy, or causal and cheaper. As it is, all that''s left of the glory days is the pretense. This restaurant serves no purpose. For the price you can eat better and more sophisticated faire downtown. And there are better, cheaper casual Itialian eateries in the area.

Celebrated my b-day here in August 2013 & it was great! Also came in a couple months after that because I was lucky enough to get a gift card for my anniversary :) I would much rather spend my $ here than at any chain restaurant in town. I had spaghetti, meatballs, bruschetta and a cannoli for dessert. Service, food, everything was good both times I was there. I keep thinking about their fettucini alfredo and I have to get back there for some soon! Took one bite off my husband's plate & wished I had ordered that too! I wish they were open more days out of the week, that is my only complaint.

This place has gone down hill and the don't even care. The portions are very small but expensive. What happen to this place??? They need to rethink what they are doing, offer bigger portions at a reduced price. PLEASE

I must say, I was terribly disappointed. Service was ok, the Waitress seemed to stand there and try to butt in while everyone was talking and having a good time. For a $15 entree, I expected a whole lot more. I got the Spaghetti and Ravioli and it was so-so...probably won't be going back since there are so many other better options for Italian in The Bend.

In order to give full disclosure, I have to admit that I can't actually be objective about Sunny Italy. It's a place my family frequented often when I was a kid. My grandfather always let me keep the change from the bill to buy candy at the checkout counter. I also had a small party there with friends and family when I graduated from college. For me it's become a nostalgic experience. As far as the food goes, a family favorite is actually the fried chicken. We also all love their Italian salad dressing. Sometimes when I'm in town, I will stop in just to buy some of that dressing to take home with me. They are very accommodating in that way. The service is usually great! Overall, the food is very basic, but good. It's almost like comfort food - nothing trendy, but it's consistent.

A little pricey, but the authentic italian food and friendly service makes it with it.

The food is what I would call American-style Italian. Unfortunately, it isn't very good. Desiccated meat and too-salty steamed vegetables for circa $25 in South Bend is not good value. The wine list does include several selections from Italy, but they're all boring, mass-produced bottles that you could find in the average supermarket (but at three times the supermarket price). Service is acceptable. Atmosphere is welcoming. If everything was 40% cheaper, I might recommend it. Except they don't take American Express.

Obnoxious hostess Katie greets you. She thinks she's in Per Se in NYC. After you get through that the food is avg. Remember most people are here after a Notre Dame football game like myself. In Chicago,NYC,Boston,or Baltimore this place would be closed already.

I went to Sunny Italy Cafe because of the great ratings here. Entering the place further enhanced my expectations; it looks very cute and homey. I wanted to order bruschetta, but for some odd reason they can't make them without cheese. So, I decided to go for the dish that made the famous (in South Bend, I guess): Spaghetti Complete. It costs $13, which is pretty steep for a pasta dish in South Bend. It comes with fresh Italian bread (which is crispy, but very airy) and a side salad (which is mainly lettuce). The spaghetti complete is by and large a meat sauce with (one small) meatball. However, the quality of it all was very disappointing. I therefore decided against taking desert, even if their options sounded good (then again, so did their pasta).

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
